helping foster children

Our project was for Hephzibah Children’s Association, a local organization that helps children who need a safe place to stay. One of the things the association does is to maintain a group home for children who are not able to live with their families.

Other organizations that help children include:

Orphan Foundation of America advocates for and provides services to foster teens. Girl Scouts may like to make care packages or knit a red scarf for the OFA.

Project Linus organizes volunteers to provide new, handmade, washable blankets to seriously ill or traumatized children. It accepts many types of blankets, so if you aren’t quite up to quilting, you could stitch or hand-tie a blanket for your local chapter.

Backpacks for Foster Kids is an organization dedicated to making sure children who enter the foster care system have essential personal items and a backpack to store them in. It is based in St. Louis, but there are many similar organizations, such as Operation Backpack, so you can check to see if there is one in your area. Your troop or group may be able to volunteer to assemble backpacks.

Something as simple as a quilt, a blanket, or a backpack can help show children that they matter and that someone cares about them. There are many ways communities can help children in group homes and in the foster care system. We hope everyone reading this can find some way to make a connection to children in need.
